Public advocate says Bronx and city?s foster children are at risk

Critics say the city is not doing all it can to make sure Bronx and city children in foster care are placed in a safe home.

The city had 400 cases of abuse or neglect from foster homes within the last year.Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum says the Administration for Children?s Services (ACS) is not screening potential foster parents using the state?s Domestic Violence Registry before placing children in homes. The registry has tracked more than a million orders of protection by women. Gotbaum says this information is not always obtained by a background check.

ACS says it does perform criminal background checks but the registry is only available to law enforcement. Gotbaum says a simple waiver from potential foster parents would bypass that.
