Hospitals in the Bronx now required to report certain infections to the state
Hospitals in the Bronx and throughout New York State must now track and report certain kinds of infections to the state health department.
The mandate comes after Governor George Pataki (R-NY) signed a bill into law to protect patients. Hospitals will have to file their reports on the number of infections their patients contract while getting treatment within two years.
State health department officials are expected to begin sharing the data with the public by 2008. As a result, hospitals will be able to see how they compare to other hospitals. Officials hope this will help encourage hospitals to improve their performance.
