Bronx to eliminate city sales tax just in time for back to school shopping
A penny saved is an extra penny to spend. Bronx residents can put this theory to the test starting September 1 when the 4 percent city sales tax is eliminated.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NY) and Governor George Pataki (R-NY) signed a bill into law Monday that eliminates the four percent city sales tax. However, the state portion of the sales tax will remain in effect. State leaders say they are trying to encourage local revenue by discouraging people from shopping in New Jersey or Connecticut.
The city sales tax elimination applies to clothing and footwear costing less than $110.
