Some Bronx athletes come out on top in the 2005 Empire State Games

A number of the nearly 100 Bronx athletes who competed in the 2005 Empire State Games took home some hardware.

The Scholastic Boys Basketball team, led by Mount St. Michael's Alejo Rodriguez won the gold medal. In addition, Eterlin Perozo and Jonathan Candelier helped the baseball team bring home gold.

The men's gymnastic team came away with silver with help from Bronx athletes John Orozco and Paul Connor. Orozco was the big individual winner of the games, taking home the Men's All-Around gold in addition to four gold medals and a silver.

Some of the girls that scored big at the games included Torkwase Green, who came in second in the 200-meter dash; Saleena Rashed, who won silver in the 100-meter hurdles; and Ashley Cummings, who finished third in the long jump.
