33 school meal programs are closing throughout Bronx
The Department of Education (DOE) is closing 33 school meal programs where Bronx children can eat free meals during the summer.
Public advocates oppose the closures and say the summer meals programs are crucial to children?s health. Advocates say the closures come at a time when more and more kids are going to soup kitchens.
In the summer of 2004, there were 140,000 Bronx and city residents under the age of 19 who ate free meals through the program.
The DOE says enough meal locations will remain open to meet demands around the city, but if this is not the case, they will reopen additional sites.
