Some Bronx, city principals will soon have control of their schools

Some Bronx and city principals will soon have more control of their schools.

The number of city schools in the autonomy zone will increase from 29 to 55, including 10 Bronx schools. Individual principals, not superintendents, control schools in the autonomy zone.

Since principals are trusted to run their schools, they have more responsibility and higher standards to reach. Some of the standards principals must reach within five years include a 90 percent attendance rate and an 80 percent graduation rate. Principals in the autonomy zone also have more control over budgets and scheduling.
