Vote to end social promotion of Bronx, city seventh-graders passes
The New York Department of Education passed a plan Monday to end social promotion of Bronx seventh-graders, starting next year.
The policy, which currently affects only third and fifth-graders, requires students to pass a standardized reading and math test in order to advance to the next grade. If the student fails either or both exams, they must go to summer school where they will retake the exams.
Students who fail the exams in summer school can go through an appeals process in an attempt to move on to the next grade based on their coursework.
