Judge rules state must pay equal disability benefits to Bronx immigrantsPosted: Updated:
A judge ruled Thursday the state must pay equal disability benefits to both legal immigrants and naturalized citizens.
Low income immigrants received $300 less in benefits than a naturalized citizen in the same position. Those immigrants being discriminated against were also being completely cut off from aid if they did not become citizens within seven years.
Defense lawyers reportedly say the state owes as much as $1.5 million in back benefits to nearly 500 refugees. According to the New York Times, a spokesperson for the state?s disability office claims the decision will have a sever financial impact on the state and they are planning to appeal the decision.
