Report finds sharp increase in the number of shootings in BX and citywide

A new report finds that there has been a sharp increase in the number of shootings in the Bronx and citywide.

Police say they are unsure why there has been a rise in gunplay considering the overall crime rate in the Bronx and citywide has declined. According to Newsday, there's been a nearly 24 percent increase in shooting incidents compared to the citywide increase of about 8 percent. The 40th Precinct was found to have shown the largest spike with twice as many shootings this year compared to last year.

The news comes at a time when the crime rate has decreased citywide nearly 5 percent since last year. According to the report, police sources say the NYPD may be stretched to thin.
