Tax-free week helps Bronx wallets and registers

Tax-free week has begun and Bronx shoppers and business owners say they are both benefiting from the break.

Through September 5 the city and state are eliminating all sales tax to coincide with back to school shopping. Shoppers do not have to pay taxes on all clothing and footwear under $110. While shoppers get to save on the latest fashions, businesses say the tax-elimination helps generate more sales.

Officials say they are hoping tax-free week will jump start the local economy. To continue aiding the economy, the city is permanently eliminating their 4 percent sales tax on the same items.
