Bronx kids heading back to school should continue to keep cell phones at home

The Department of Education decided Friday to keep the ban on cell phones in Bronx and city schools, according to a New York Post report.

Many parents have been battling the cell phone ban for months saying they should be able to reach their children at all times, including school hours. School officials argue the phones are a distraction during the day. Schools Chancellor Joel Klein was reconsidering the ban after pressure from parents, but decided to keep the rule in place.

School officials put the ban in place to maintain order and safety. The ban falls under the education department?s discipline code under prohibited equipment.
