Prices on the rise at the pump and maybe in Bronx cabs

Gas prices are affecting Bronx wallets and if a local group gets its way, prices may affect Bronx cab prices.

The State Federation of Taxi Drivers is proposing a taxi surcharge to cover gas costs. Currently there is a 50 cents to $1 additional fee on any trip due to average New York gas prices being above $2 a gallon. If passed, the new surcharge would increase by $2 if the average price of gas goes up to $4. However, not all drivers agree with the surcharge. Some drivers say an increased fee might hurt business because consumers will not be able to afford the new prices.

The committee is meeting September 8 and is expected to make a decision.Related Story
