Bronx firefighters are returning the favor for hurricane victims

During 9/11 residents in southeastern Louisiana banded together to donate three new fire trucks to the city of New York, now the NYFD are returning the favor by sending assistance to areas most affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Under training provided by the Red Cross, the group of volunteer firefighters prepared to become members of the Disaster Assistance Relief Teams (DART). DART members learn how to build shelters, feed crowds of people and counsel the grieving. Firefighters traveling to the South are offering more than just their rescue knowledge but also their three weeks of vacation time.

The American Red Cross says individuals wanting to help should first contact a relief organization before heading down South.Related Story:
