City official calls for simplified version of Department of Education's rules

A city councilwoman released a condensed version of the public school rule book Wednesday after deeming the Department of Education?s book too long.

The Chancellor?s Regulations for Parents is a 1,000-page book released by the city?s Department of Education. City Councilwoman Eva Moskowitz (D-4th District) feels some of the rules in the book are absurd and do not make sense. Moskowitz is asking the Department of Education to simplify the book so that parents and educators can understand the rules.

The Department of Education says it welcomes suggestions. However, education officials add that many of the rules in the book are required by city, state and federal law.
