Morrisania fire injures 17 and leaves 53 homeless

A fire on Eagle Avenue in Morrisania has injured 17 residents and destroyed an entire apartment complex.

The fire, which broke out around 4 a.m. Sunday, started in a church and quickly spread to the neighboring apartment complex. Firefighters say the complex is uninhabitable leaving all 53 tenants homeless. The 17 injured in the blaze include 13 firefighters, two police officers and two residents of the burned apartment building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Red Cross has set up a temporary relief center for the victims at P.S. 140. The Red Cross is providing food, blankets and other necessities and says it will help the homeless residents plan for permanent housing.
