Bronx Terminal Market merchants fight eviction by refusing to pay rent

In the ongoing battle to stay in the south Bronx, merchants from the Bronx Terminal Market announced Wednesday they will no longer pay rent to their landlord.

The merchants are supposed to relocate to make way for a new gateway center, which will include a shopping complex. So far the merchants have been allowed to stay put because of an ongoing lawsuit. They are fighting to remain at the current location or have the city find a viable spot for their businesses.

According to the landlord, Related Companies, the merchants have been given a generous relocation package. But the merchants believe Related Companies is trying to hurt their businesses and is misusing their rent money.
