Bronx officials support teachers in rally for fair contract

Bronx officials joined teachers in a rally outside City Hall Thursday to push for a fair contract.

Bronx teachers make 15 percent less than their counterparts in the suburbs. Officials say many teachers leave the Bronx for better deals elsewhere. To keep the teachers in the Bronx, state and local leaders are urging Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NY) to start negotiating for a fair contract.

The United Federation of Teachers says educators in the Bronx have been working without a contract for two and a half years. Also, teachers have not received a raise in three years. It?s been a year since the last formal negotiating session and teachers say that sends a message that they are not a priority.
