New transportation bill provides funds for pedestrian safety near Bronx schoolPosted: Updated:
PS/MS 194 parents who worry about their children?s safety around the school may finally be getting their way.
Federal funding has been put in place to fix the traffic problem around the school as part of a new transportation bill signed by President Bush. Congressman Anthony Wiener (D-Bronx) says there is more money for pedestrian safety in this bill than any other transportation bill.
There no decision yet on what changes will be made in the area. Some parents have suggested more stoplights and crossing guards. Other suggestions include additional signs, new speed bumps and better lighting. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will do studies to determine what changes will be most effective. DOT officials will also meet with parents in the next few months to hear their suggestions.
