Kids injured after bus overturns on Major Deegan ExpresswayPosted: Updated:
Several students were injured after a school bus overturned Friday on the Major Deegan Expressway near exit 12.
The bus was carrying more than 40 children and 10 adults when it flipped over. Police say the crash occurred when another vehicle, trying to merge onto the expressway, slammed into the back end of the bus. The southbound side was completely shut down and the northbound side was partially open.
The students are from St. Joseph's School in Manhattan and were returning from a teacher?s funeral in the Bronx. Dozens of emergency workers from Westchester and the Bronx responded, quickly pulling the children out of the bus. Police say the driver of the car was hospitalized, and the crash is considered an accident. The victims were taken to three Bronx hospitals ? Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center. Doctors say the children?s injuries were all minor due to the fact they were wearing seatbelts.
