Bronx teachers to see pay hike under new tentative agreement

The United Federation of Teachers and Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NY) reached a tentative contract agreement Monday.

As part of the agreement, teachers will see an increase in salary of 15 percent. They will see a starting pay increase from $39,000 to $42,000 a year and a maximum base pay increase from $81,000 to $92,000. The agreement also extends the school year by two days, requires teachers to work an additional 50 minutes per week ? or 10 minutes per day, extends teacher contracts by more than four years, allows principals to execute more powers and contains measures to improve school safety and discipline.

City teachers have not had a contract since May 2003 and before Monday?s agreement the UFT had threatened to strike. The UFT represents 140,000 retired and active teachers in the largest school system in the nation, with 1.1 million students.
