Tanker truck explosion causes delays on Bruckner ExpresswayPosted: Updated:
A tanker truck that caught on fire on Bruckner Boulevard and Hunts Point Avenue caused massive delays Tuesday.
Two tractor trailers were involved in the accident, causing one to flip over and 6,000 gallons of fuel to spill. The Bruckner Expressway is closed in both directions and there were multiple manhole fires in the area. However, authorities say the road should reopen around 7:30 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. In the meantime, the Department of Transportation says it is checking for any structural damage to the roadway.
All Amtrak service has been suspended from New York to New Haven and Metro-North has agreed to honor Amtrak tickets between Grand Central and New Haven. The accident temporarily forced the 6 Train to close between 3rd Avenue and Parkchester but service is back up and running. Four buildings were singed and at least ten cars caught on fire as a result of the incident.
At this time, investigators are not sure what caused the fire. The driver of the overturned truck died in the accident.
