BX residents criticize upgrades to Hunts Point sewage treatment plant

Some Bronx residents are criticizing a plan to upgrade a Hunts Point sewage treatment plant.

The plan calls for four 13-story ?digesters? to be built next to the soon-to-open Barretto Point Park on the waterfront. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) officials say it is not an expansion of the plant but an upgrade with better technology.

The new structures would be the tallest in the area. Many residents fear the buildings will be an eyesore to the community. However, the Daily News reports that officials are talking about ways to spruce them up with colors and spotlights. The plant upgrades are a $700 million project.
