Community service replaces jail time for some non-violent offenders in the Bronx

Community service is replacing jail time for some non-violent offenders in the Bronx.

Rather than serving time in jail, non-violent offenders who have committed crimes such as protection, drug possession or shop-lifting can do community service. The ?Bronx Community Solution? program has been in effect since January of this year. Court officials say the program is less expensive than jail.

Officials say the problem-solving approach to justice helps improve compliance with court orders.
