Firefighters educate Bronx residents on fire hazards

To help jump start Fire Prevention Week the FDNY visited some Bronx children and parents Monday to educate them on the dangers of fires.

The theme for 2005?s Fire Prevention Week is ?Use Candles with Care.? That?s why firefighters taught residents the dangers involved with unattended candles. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says the number of fires started by candles has more than tripled since 1990. Firefighters also say to make sure each home is equipped with at least one carbon monoxide and fire detector.

NFPA says firefighters responded to a national estimate of 395,000 blazes in 2004. With winter coming, fire officials say the number of fires tends to increase due to heating devices. Firefighters say Fire Protection Week continues through October 15 but they hope residents will remember to blow out candles year round.
