Some Bronx residents may pay double on heating bills

Some Bronx residents that use heating oil may pay double on their heating bills this winter.

Energy experts say prices for heating oil and natural gas continue to increase. A Hunts Point Fuel Corporation official says the rising prices could be from the effects of Hurricane Katrina or the war in Iraq. Either way, he says higher heating costs hurt the economy.

Bronx residents can take certain steps to try and lower their bills. Experts say turning down the thermostat when residents aren?t home can help. They also recommend having a professional inspect furnaces to see if cold air is entering a home.
