Retaining wall gives way in Melrose possibly due to heavy rain

At least five homes are in danger of collapsing Thursday after a retaining wall collapsed possibly due to the heavy rain.

The Red Cross is helping more than 30 families find temporary housing while the building department inspects the remaining portion of the wall. Once the inspection is complete, building department officials will determine when residents can return or if anyone else needs to be evacuated.

Meantime, meteorologists expect an additional three to five inches of rain in the area over the new few days.
