Number of Bronx grandparents raising grandchildren is climbing
Grandparents are generally associated with giving chocolate chip cookies and other small presents. However, a growing number of grandparents are now providing a home and raising their grandchildren.
Officials say in the Bronx 18,000 grandparents are raising more than 54,000 grandchildren. Some grandparents may be offering what they can but they too need some assistance. Organizations like the Presbyterian Senior Services and the West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing are helping those in need by creating 50 affordable apartments in Longwood. The affordable housing is offered to grandparents who make less than $17,000 a year.
For grandparents needing more than financial assistance, health officials say there are services that offer counseling, especially for grandparents raising children who were orphaned by AIDS.
