Groups dig into issue of uprooting Bronx gardens to build condos

The More Gardens! Coalition, a group dedicated to the preservation of community gardens, met with law students from Columbia University Saturday at the Courtland Garden in Melrose to discuss the legalities involved with uprooting some Bronx gardens.

The gardens discussed are slated to be turned into condo and apartment buildings. There are more than 130 community gardens throughout the Bronx and More Gardens! says 66 of those are in danger of being destroyed. In addition to preserving existing oases, the group strives to create new natural refuges for Bronx residents to enjoy.

Attendants say Saturday?s meeting not only dug up a legal discussion but offered a chance to literally get their hands dirty by planting vegetation in the Courtland Garden.
