City Council panel recommends billions be spent to improve BX, city teachers
A City Council panel is recommending the city spend billions of dollars to improve teachers and expand pre-kindergarten in Bronx and city schools.
The recommendations are the second part of a three-part report by the 14-member commission. In order to improve education, the panel recommends creating ?lab schools.? In those schools, top educators would observe and mentor teachers. The report also calls for a pilot preschool program for infants and toddlers.
According to the commission, the reforms will cost less than $3.5 billion. The commission was formed in response to a court order to allocate an additional $5.6 billion each year into city schools. In the first part of its report, the panel called for raising the top teacher salary.
