Nurses union says shortage is affecting Bronx health

The New York State Nurses Association, the union for nurses, says a severe nurse shortage throughout the boroughs is harming patient care.

The union says uncompetitive salaries are to blame for the decline in the number of employed nurses. According to the union, there are an estimated 1,000 vacant slots throughout Bronx and the other four boroughs. The union says the increasing number of patients assigned per nurse threatens patient care and creates a greater risk for tragedy.

Unless the unemployment rate drops among medical attendants, some nurses fear the number of medical mistakes will increase dramatically.
