Van Cortland Park houses event to help the homeless

Organizers found a home to host the first annual ?Run for the Homeless? in Van Cortland Park Saturday.

More than 100 Bronx residents gathered to participate in the 3.1 mile event. Organizers say the walk?s goals include raising awareness regarding homeless individuals and the hardships they face, the type of people who no longer have a bed to sleep in and to raise money to help the homeless in the Bronx.

The walk raised more than $8,000 for four Bronx shelters. The donations received will be used to fund programs aimed at decreasing the number of homeless welfare recipients and increasing the number individuals in the work force.
