Rezoning laws change Bronx neighborhoods

Rezoning in the Bronx is changing vacant buildings into homes and preserving some neighborhoods just as they are.

Zoning determines what type of buildings can be built on a piece of land whether it be residential, commercial or manufacturing. Zoning also has bulk requirements, which determines how much square footage can be put on a lot and how it should be distributed. Many are in favor of rezoning, saying it increases the size of a community. Opponents, however, say growth can be detrimental and will make a place less desirable if unchecked.

Officials say the Bronx?s population is expected to grow by 500,000 in the next five years.Related link New York City Department of Public Planning
