M.S. 223 students get a real-world lesson in finance
A school in Mott Haven is using a unique program that not only provides students with a real-world lesson in finance, but also encourages them to achieve.
M.S. 223's program, which is called Student Bucks, rewards student achievements with fake money. The more students achieve, the more money they earn. After they accumulate enough money they are then entitled to a trip to the school store to collect prizes. In addition, they can deposit their money into a special bank where it earns interest.
Principal Ramon Gonzalez says the program began in 2003 with the hope of giving students a new incentive to learn. Gonzalez dismisses the notion that the students are too young to deal with money issues. He feels the students are getting an important lesson.
