Near building collapse forces Bronx residents out of their homes

A near building collapse forced residents on Monroe Avenue out of their homes Wednesday.

The six-inch crack along one side of the building not only forced the evacuation of the residents in the 12 apartments inside, but also those in nearby buildings. Many neighbors say heavy construction on an empty lot next door to the apartment building is to blame. The Department of Buildings deemed the building structurally unsound.

Con Edison says power had to be shut off to part of the block while the fire and building departments continue their investigation.
