Bronx community members want tunnel repairs to continue

Some Bronx community activists say the Selwyn Avenue Tunnel, which was deemed a hazard concern, is slowly being cleaned up by the Department of Transportation (DOT) but several repairs remain.

Prior to the DOT?s cleanup, the tunnel was filled with graffiti, trash and dead pigeons ? that many doctors say posed a threat to would-be asthma victims. The DOT began its cleanup efforts in the beginning of October. However, community board members say since then nothing has been done and many of the tunnel?s main problems still remain, such as cracked walls.

Community members say they have written a letter to the DOT outlining all of the remaining problems inside the tunnel but have not received a response.
