Hunts Point finally welcomes the Fulton Fish Market

After months of legal disputes and more than 180 years at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan, the Fulton Fish Market cast opened its doors in Hunts Point Monday.

Unlike the Manhattan location, the new Bronx facility is an indoor-climate controlled environment ? something merchants say will prove beneficial during the harsh winter months. The fish market was originally scheduled to move to the new $85 million facility in January of this year. However, legal battles over loading rights with Laro Services postponed the relocation. After several disputes, Laro won the rights to continue unloading the fish for the next three years.

Critics concerned over whether organized crime may become tangled up in the new facility are told the new facility is more secure since it is indoors, requires merchants to have an access ID card and is surrounded by a fence with a security gate out front.
