Bronx resident among convicted sex offenders to be released from mental hospital
A Manhattan judge ordered Tuesday the release of 12 convicted sex offenders from a mental hospital.
The judge ruled the men were illegally detained when they were sent to the psychiatric hospital on Governor George Pataki?s (R-NY) orders after their prison sentences ended. The men will be released pending examinations by two court-appointed psychiatrists. The judge says unless the psychiatrists find the ex-convicts to be mentally ill or dangers to themselves or to the society, they will be freed.
One of the ex-convicts is Bronx resident Charles Brooks. According to the Daily News, Brooks climbed through a window of an apartment in 1997 and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.
