Forum held to discuss success of charter schools in the Bronx
Charter school principals, Bronx parents and a local assemblyman met Wednesday at Bronx Prep to discuss the success of charter schools.
Many students who attend a charter school say they really enjoy it. Officials say the number of names on the waiting lists to get into Bronx charter schools is in the hundreds. Currently, there is a cap on the number of charter schools allowed to exist in the state. Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D-BX) is fighting to change that. He says charter schools have proven their success and there is no reason not to open more of them.
Benjamin plans to reintroduce a bill in January to allow 50 more charter schools to open in the city. Benjamin says he will take the information he learned from parents and school officials at the forum and use it to get support from other state Assembly members.
