Bronx and City Council members debate for future speaker position

At the end of this year, City Council Speaker Gifford Miller (D-NY) will step down due to term limits and seven other council members are ready to take his place.

Candidates Bill de Blasio (D-Brooklyn), Lewis Fidler (D-Brooklyn), Melinda Katz (D-Queens), Christine Quinn (D-NY), David Weprin (D-Queens), Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) and Joel Rivera (D-Bronx) debated Thursday in hopes of becoming the next City Council speaker. Contenders discussed issues regarding a two-term limit, which they all agreed should remain instated. Another topic up for debate was whether they believe the state will reinstate the commuter tax to help alleviate financial deficits, which all candidates agree is realistic.

The new speaker must receive at least 26 out of 51 council member votes in order to be elected.
