Experts give BX residents tips to prevent online identity theft

Some Bronx residents are avoiding the crowds this holiday season by shopping online, but experts say there are a few things people should know before making a purchase.

Security experts say when making a purchase online, people should always keep their Social Security numbers a secret. Experts also urge people to look at the URL at the top of the web page. They say it should start with HTTP and when you switch to the secure part of the site it should say HTTPS. The S stands for security, ensuring that it?s safe to enter personal information.

Experts add that everyone should check their credit report prior to shopping online to ensure that their identity has not been stolen.
