Bronx drivers urged to rev up winter protection for cars

As the temperatures start to drop below freezing, Bronx residents are advised to speed up the preparation process of winterizing their cars.

AAA says drivers should ensure they have proper winter tires, which are most effective in snow and ice due to their tread depth. Travel officials say power is another key to winterizing cars, so residents should keep the vehicle?s battery clean and its connections tight. Drivers should also test their car?s hoses and belts, according to the experts. AAA also says the most important safety component is visibility, so residents should make sure their cars are always clean so others will notice the vehicles.

Experts say it takes vehicles up to nine times as long to stop in snow and ice as it does on dry pavement.
