Research group warns Bronx shoppers on downside to gift cards

When all else fails, many Bronx shoppers resort to buying gift cards. However, the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) warns these quick and easy presents do contain setbacks.

According to NYPIRG, many cards have expiration dates or the card?s value starts to decrease after a set date, usually a year after initial purchase. The group says the biggest problem with gift cards are the hidden fees that many consumers may come cross when trying to use their cards.

NYPIRG says recipients should try to use the cost of their card as soon as possible to avoid losing its original value.
