Bronx commuters face new rules and penalties on subways

Effective Monday, Bronx and city commuters must abide by new rules when riding the subways.

Under the new rules, riders are not allowed to jump the turnstile even if their MetroCards are not functioning properly. Authorities will also issue fines to riders straddling bikes on train cars. It is also a violation to occupy more than one seat by placing one?s bags or feet on adjacent space. Finally, commuters can not pass between cars, even if the train is not moving.

Many riders say the new rules are unfair and more of a hassle than a help. However, some straphangers say they appreciate the rules, especially those creating more seating space.
