Low-income Bronx residents to save hundreds on heating

Some Bronx residents living in affordable housing will receive a holiday gift lasting through April. In an agreement with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the Bronx received some discounted heating oil Tuesday.

The Bronx is scheduled to receive a total of eight million gallons of oil under Chavez?s Fuel for the Poor program. The program is an alliance between Chavez and Representative Jose Serrano (D-Bronx) to help non-profit housing groups counter high heating costs this winter. Under the program, more than 8,000 low-income residents will save an estimated $100 to $200 every month.

The White House, who is critical of Chavez?s governing policies, would not comment on the program.
