?Fuel for the Poor? program to keep BX residents warm this winter

Eight million gallons of discounted heating oil is coming to the Bronx as part of the Venezuelan president?s ?Fuel for the poor? program.

The money is going to non-profit groups in the Bronx to counter the high cost of heating this winter. Residents are expected to save from $100 to $200 through April. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Congressman Jose Serrano spoke about the program when Chavez visited the borough in September.

The White House is critical of Chavez?s governing policies and wouldn?t comment on this specific program. However, Serrano says it doesn?t matter what Chavez?s incentives were because he?s helping more than 8,000 low-income people.
