Police officer killed in Bronx shootout
An off-duty NYPD officer was shot in the chest and killed during a confrontation with two burglars outside his home Saturday in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx, one of whom was identified as a TV actor.
Officials say 28-year-old Daniel Enchautegui had returned home after finishing a late shift when he heard glass breaking in the house next door. When he went outside to investigate, one of the two men fired at him, striking the officer once in the chest. However, Enchautegui still managed to shoot the two burglars.
The alleged gunman, Steven Armento, of Yonkers, was shot four times and was in serious condition. Lillo Brancato Jr., who appeared in "The Sopranos" and ?A Bronx Tale," was shot twice and was in critical condition. Both were being treated at Jacobi Medical Center, the same hospital where the officer died.
Enchautegui, a three-year veteran, was the second New York City police officer to die in the line of duty this year. Dillon Stewart of Elmont was fatally shot last week.
