New report finds food stamp application process discourages BX residents
A new report and a new city study found information about applying for food stamps is complicated and hard to come by in the Bronx and city.
Approximately 800,000 New Yorkers are eligible for food stamps but according to a Urban Justice Center (UJC) report, they are not receiving them. Some say the complicated application process discourages people who want to participate in the program.
The City Council did its own study on the food stamp process, which had similar findings. Council members say some of the recommendations the UJC suggested have become new measures. One of those measures allows people to apply for food stamps on the Internet. However, the UJC says the best way to improve the system is to eliminate office visits completely.
