Mayor crunches numbers, includes NYPD bullet proof vests in NYC budget

? Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) has reworked the city budget to appropriate funds for several items the City Council wanted, including better bullet proof vests for NYPD cops.
The mayor and council were in a budget dance over $340 million in services. Bloomberg has now included more money for classrooms, funding for projects like the new Yankee Stadium and Croton water filtration plant. However, the change many are applauding is money for new vests for cops.
Bloomberg maintains that although the city has a $3.5 billion surplus this year, equally large deficits are projected for 2008 and 2009.
