Bronx street christened for slain neighborhood police officer
A Bronx street was renamed Tuesday for an off-duty police officer shot to death last year.
The corner of Westchester Avenue and Arnow Place will now be known as Detective Daniel Enchautegui Way. The renaming comes after calls for the officer to be honored for heroism. On December 10, 2005, Enchautegui, 28, heard glass breaking at a neighbor?s house. Even though he was off-duty at the time, Enchautegui went to investigate. The detective encountered two men who police say had broken into the house. Enchautegui and the men exchanged gunfire. He was struck and killed. The suspects were wounded.
Enchautegui?s family will face his accused murderers on September 25. Police say Enchautegui was one of 300 victims killed by illegal guns last year.Related Information:Two men arraigned in shooting death of police officer from the Bronx"Sopranos" actor pleads not guilty in murder of NYPD officer in the Bronx
