Solemn ceremonies held across the nation on anniversary of 9/11
Five years after the 9/11 terror attacks on New York City?s World Trade Center, solemn ceremonies are planned across the nation Monday to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed.
In the area where the Twin Towers once stood in the financial district of Manhattan, spouses and partners of the 2,749 people who died at the trade center read the names of the victims. Families and friends of those killed were also at the site to lay flowers to remember their loved ones. Moments of silence were held at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:59 a.m. and 10:29 a.m., the times when the planes struck the towers and the towers fell.
A moment of silence was also held at 8:46 a.m. in the American and United terminals of Logan International Airport in Boston. Both flights took off from Logan before slamming into the towers.
In a new age of war and terrorism, some New Yorkers say they cannot help but wonder if we are any safer now than we were then. Bronx residents say we as a nation need to not only remember but to learn from the events of that day, now five years ago.
